Volunteer Program

We are always looking for committed volunteers who are passionate about working with seniors.

Each year, the Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) volunteers provide an invaluable service to Medicare beneficiaries and their representatives by providing the following services:

Counseling beneficiaries about Medicare basics

Connecting with beneficiaries who have limited incomes and helping them apply for programs that will save them money

Medicare website searches to determine the available and most favorable health and prescription plans for your situation

Participating in outreach events to notify the public about HICAP

The San Mateo HICAP office is always looking for volunteers that possess the following skills:

We ask our volunteers to make a 1-2 year commitment to the program after they have completed training. This also includes contributing 12-15 hours per month to the program.

California Department of Aging provides oversight of the HICAP program through contracts with local Area Agencies on Aging offices.
